Polymer Physics (PhD-Position)
Regulation of the morphogenesis and the mechanics of epithelia by controllable nano-switches for the cell adhesion
The Institute of Experimental Physics at the Ulm University has an open temporary position for a
PhD-Student (part-time 50%)
in the field of biophysics/polymer physics. The position is funded by a research project on the Regulation of the morphogenesis and the mechanics of epithelia by controllable nano-switches for the cell adhesion.
To form a physical barrier is one of the foremost functions of epithelia. This function is mainly governed by the properties of the cytoskeleton and by cell-cell contacts. In this project the modulation of the structure of this supracellular matrix of macromolecular complexes and the optimization of the mechanical properties of epithelia is controlled by a spatially hierarchically ordered and temporally variable nanostructured culture substrate.
The successful applicant for this PhD-position will culture cells on substrates manufactured at the University of Karlsruhe according to predefined protocols. She/he will employ the Raman microscope to investigate substrates and cells. She/he will investigate cells and cell complexes under mechanical stress by AFM. She/he is responsible for experiments with optically switchable molecules. She/he will work with lasers and optical systems. Some experiments will be carried out at the site of the cooperation partner at the University of Karlsruhe.
The salary for the part time position is 50% of the salary according to TV-L Level E13.
The successful applicant is expected to submit a PhD-thesis.
Ulm University seeks to increase the number of women in research and teaching. Qualified female researchers are kindly asked to apply for the position.
Your application must reach the Institute of Experimental Physics no later than February 28th, 2009. Please address the application to
